World's Marine Scientists Endorse Large-Scale 'National Parks at Sea'

More than 245 marine scientists from 35 countries, including Australia, have endorsed a science statement calling for the
establishment of a worldwide system of very large, highly protected marine reserves. The statement identifies these
reserves as "an essential and long overdue contribution to improving stewardship of the global marine environment." To read
the science statement and campaign media release go to: www.protectourcoralsea.org.au/news-media

Marine protection not just about fish…corals benefit too!

A recent study that looked at reefs from 83 different countries, including Australia and our very own Coral Sea, has found that
protected areas are important for coral health. Over the 38 year period covered by the surveys, the researchers found that coral
cover declined on unprotected reefs, while there was no change in coral cover on protected reefs. Though no change might not sound
terribly exciting, when you consider that 40% of coral reefs globally have been lost or severely damaged as a result of human
activities, no change suddenly sounds pretty good! Other than Lihou Reefs and the Coringa-Herald National Nature Reserve all
other reefs in the Coral Sea are unprotected. The scientific article can be found here.
